Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily and Sardinia. In terms of its geostrategic location and its geopolitical situation it is very important with respect to the eastern Mediterranean.
With its location dominating the coasts of Anatolia and the Middle East and its commercial importance, over the centuries many civilizations have settled or acquired the island.
Northern Cyprus consists of 5 provinces: Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt and İskele. Nicosia is the capital and the most populous area. The second most important city is Famagusta with its port. Although Kyrenia stands out for its touristic opportunities, Güzelyurt and İskele also have sizable populations.
